Representative from Clinton county, was born May 3, 1857, at Maquoketa, Iowa, his father having been a native of England and his mother of the State of Virginia. The couple came west in the early history of the State, locating at Maquoketa. He received a common school education in the city of Maquoketa and the country schools of Jackson county, his father operating what was known as the Kendall stone quarry, four miles east of Maquoketa. In 1882 he was united in marriage to Miss Anna Kehn of Bloomfield township. Shortly after his marriage he moved to a farm just adjoining the corporate limits of Delmar, Clinton county, where he has since resided. Followed the occupation of farming for twenty-seven years and was a breeder of thoroughbred White Chester hogs for twenty years. Recently retired from active duties and turned the operation of his farm over to his sons. Has held the office of assessor for two terms. Elected Representative in 1906 and re-elected in 1908. A Democrat in politics.
