Representative from Dallas county, was born at Bersted, Inn Fields, a suburb of Leeds, Yorkshire, England, January 24, 1841. He came to America with his parents when four years old, settling in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania. Here he had the privileges of the schools of the city until he was thirteen years old, when he was compelled to begin work to help support the family. In 1855 moved with his parents to a farm in Ohio. Enlisted in August, 1861, in the Twentieth Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Served in the ranks from Donnellson to Shiloh and to the siege and capture of Vicksburg. January 1, 1864, was transferred to clerical service with the Medical Purveyor's Department, where he served until the close of the war. Taught school in Ohio for a few terms before and after the war and also taught for a few terms after coming to Iowa. Came to Iowa when twenty-seven years old, living one year in Iowa county, then moving to Dallas county in 1869, where he has since lived. Since living in Dallas county has put under cultivation over eight hundred acres of land, four hundred acres of which he still owns. Was engaged for a few years in the grain business and four years in the general mercantile business. Gave up his other business interests in 1880 and has since that time devoted his entire time to his farm and live stock interests. Elected Representative in 1906, and re-elected in 1908. A Republican in politics.
