Representative from Adams county, was born at Gouverneur, St. Lawrence county, New York, August 14, 1844. His father was a native of New York and a descendent of the Rhode Island Settlement while his mother was a native of Massachusetts and a descendent of the Plymouth Rock Colony. Mr. Smith was educated in the rural schools of New York and at Gouverneur Seminary. Moved from New York to Illinois in October, 1865, living at Plano and Creston for about six years during which time he engaged in farming and teaching school. Moved to Holt township, Taylor county, Iowa, in March, 1871, and in 1897 he moved to a farm in Adams county. He left the farm in 1904 and moved to Corning where he now lives. Was married in 1875 to Miss Arta E. Morris, of Brooks, Iowa, and to them have been born a son and two daughters. Has served as justice of the peace. Is a member of the Methodist church. Elected Representative in 1910. A Republican in politics.
