Representative from Montgomery county, was born in Chicago, Illinois, February 22, 1872. His father, Edward Hayes, is a native of Connecticut and his mother of New York, while his early ancestors came from Scotland. Came with his parents to Red Oak, Iowa, in 1876, where he has since resided. His education was obtained in the Red Oak high school, supplemented by a business course; he then attended Northwestern University at Evanston, Illinois, for a year, and followed this up with a years' special work at the Berlitz School of Languages in Chicago, studying German and French. After reading law for some time in a law office in Chicago, he entered the law department of the State University at Iowa City, graduating in 1896, and was admitted to the bar the same year. Was associated for a number of years with his father in the real estate business and farming; later became assistant cashier of the Red Oak National Bank. Owing to ill-health he gave up indoor work and became an active farmer. Has been interested in good roads and good schools and other public enterprises. Elected Representative in 1910. A Democrat in politics.
