Representative from Polk county, was born* at Monroe, Jasper county, Iowa, December 16, 1870. Is the son of R. B. and Catherine E. Shankland and is of Scotch-Irish descent. His father was born in Ohio, and was a soldier in the Civil war, serving in Co. I, 36th Ill. Reg. His mother was a native of New York state. At a very early age he moved with his parents from the town of Monroe to a near-by farm, where he grew to young manhood, attending the country schools and doing the work usually allotted to the farm boy. Graduated from the Monroe high school and attended Benton Harbor College at Benton Harbor, Michigan. Taught school for about eight years. Graduated from the Iowa College of Law, Drake University, and was admitted to the bar in 1901. Has practiced law in Des Moines ever since and for the past six years has been a member of the law firm of McLaughlin & Shankland. Was married in 1902 to Mamie E. Babcock. He has always been an active republican. Was temporary and permanent chairman of the Seventh district republican congressional convention in 1908. Was secretary of the Polk county central committee from 1908 to 1910. Is a member of the Masonic order, K. of P., A. O. U. W. and Yeoman lodges. Elected representative in 1910. Re-elected in 1912. A republican in politics.
