Representative from Appanoose county, was born near Centerville, Iowa, May 6, 1849, of American parentage of German descent. His father, David Shaeffer, and mother, Lydia Hiestand, were born and reared and united in marriage in Fairfield county, Ohio. They removed to Appanoose in 1846. He received his education in the common schools with the exception of one term spent at Western College. September 26, 1875, he united in marriage with Miss Theresa A. Robinson of Monroe county, who was born in Riply county, Indiana. He continued farming during the most of his married life, his wife having died December 21, 1910. He entered the ministry of the United Brethren church in 1883, and is at present a member of the Iowa State conference of that church. Has acted as committeeman of his township and delegate to county and state conventions. For a number of years held the office of justice of the peace and township assessor and for over thirty years has been identified with the school board of his township, serving as sub-director, president and for over twenty-three years as secretary. He also holds a notary public commission. Was elected representative in 1914. A democrat in politics.
