Representative from Monona county, was born on March 29, 1855, on a farm in Jasper county, Iowa. His father was a native of Maryland and his mother of Ohio. He was educated in the schools of Jasper county and has always lived in Iowa. Was married in 1879 to Miss Effie M. Cain, of Colfax, who died in 1900, leaving a son, Walter M., who is associated with his father in the contracting business. Was married again in 1902, to Miss Myra Morse, of Monona county. Three children were born to this union, two girls and a boy. He lives in Onawa and is engaged in agriculture and the breeding of Aberdeen-Angus cattle. Has been in the contracting business for several years, being a member of the firm, "The Rowles Company," building contractors, whose specialty is building court houses and public buildings. They have erected many public buildings in Iowa and adjoining states. He was elected representative in 1910, also in 1914. A democrat in politics.

Has been engaged in the mercantile business, stock buying, live stock commission business, brick manufacturing, and building and operating electric light plants. Has been in the contracting business for several years, being the senior member of the firm of Rowles & Bailey. They have erected many public buildings in Iowa and adjoining states. Has never before held public office. Elected Representative in 1910. A Democrat in politics.
