Representative from Bremer county, was born in Buchanan county, Iowa, December 11, 1861, of German parentage. Soon after his birth his parents removed to Waverly, Bremer county, which has since been his home. Attended the public schools and learned the printer's trade. Was editor of the Waverly Democrat for twenty-five years. Was postmaster of his city during the administration of Grover Cleveland. He became a member of the democratic state central committee in 1904, and was re-elected in 1906. Was its chairman in 1906, directing the vigorous and almost successful campaign of that year. At present he devotes his time to the national league for medical freedom, of which he is national second vice-president. Was nominated by the democratic members of the thirty-third general assembly as their candidate for speaker. Elected representative in 1906, re-elected in 1908, 1910, 1912 and 1914. A democrat in politics.
