Representative from Butler county, was born on a farm near Clarksville, March 17, 1876. His father, Henry Atkinson, was born in Yorkshire, England, his mother in Canada. His parents were pioneers of Butler county, his father having settled there in 1854 and his mother two years later. He attended the rural school, Clarksville public school, and Upper Iowa University at Fayette for three years. Later he entered the State University of Iowa, doing special work in history and political science for one year, after which he entered the school of law, from which he graduated. Was admitted to the bar in 1906. After graduating he engaged in the Lyceum and Chautauqua business, which is his occupation at the present time. He married Miss Rachel Patti Maxon, who died in 1909. Is a member of the K.P. and Elks lodges and also Of the Ancient order of Mystic Shrine. Elected representative in 1912. Re-elected in 1914. Elected speaker of House of Representatives of the 36th general assembly. A republican in politics.
