Representative from Mitchell county, was born in Tama county, Iowa, July 12, 1858, of Scotch parentage. He was educated in the rural schools and in Traer high school and a private academy. He removed to Mitchell county in January, 1883. Served as sheriff of the county from 1891 to 1896. Was associate editor of The Mitchell County Press from 1904 to 1908. Was married in 1895 to Miss Ethel Lovejoy. Elected representative in 1914. Re-elected in 1916. A republican in politics.
