Representative from Van Buren county, was born in Columbiana county, Ohio, July 23, 1846. Came with his parents to Van Buren county, Iowa, traveling overland, in December 1854, settling near Utica where his boyhood days were spent. Was educated in the public schools of the county and the high school at Davenport. Was married to Amanda M. Thompson, October 27, 1868, who, with three sons, is living. His home was on a farm until 1875 when he was elected county superintendent of schools. On November 15, 1879, he purchased a half interest in the Keosauqua Republican with which paper he is still connected, a period of nearly thirty-eight years. Served as United States Supervisor of census for southeastern Iowa, in 1880, 1890, 1900 and 1910. Elected representative in 1916. A republican in politics.
