Representative from Wapello county, was born at Ridgeville Corners, Henry county, Ohio, on June 18, 1858. His ancestor, John Emery, came from England in 1635 and settled in Newbury, Massachusetts. His mother, Mary Harper, was born in Ireland and came to this country at the age fourteen. His father, Josiah Bartlett Emery, died in June, 1861, while actively engaged in enlisting a company for service in the Civil War. His widowed mother brought her family to Ottumwa, Iowa, in 1863, and from that time until the fall of 1875, he spent his time at work on the farm and attending the public schools of Wapello county. From 1875 to 1881, he attended Highland University, Kansas, completing his course in that year. He graduated also in the law class of 1882 of the State University of Iowa. The following ten years he practiced law in Ottumwa. In 1892 he was made secretary of the People's Building and Savings association of Ottumwa, in which business he is now engaged. He is a member of the First Presbyterian church, of all the bodies of York Rite Masonry, also of the Chamber of Commerce, Wapello club and Rotary club of Ottumwa. He was in 1884 a charter member of Company G, of the old Second Regiment, I. N. G. (later Co. G 54th regiment and still later Co. G, of the 168th regiment) and was a member of the Iowa National Guard in various capacities from private to captain, for about eighteen years. He has heretofore held no public office except that of township clerk, member of the city council and police judge of Ottumwa and secretary of the State Board of Education. He was married to Miss Annette McIntosh in Salt Lake City in 1903 to which union three children have been born, Helen, aged sixteen; Mary Lucile, aged fourteen and George Daniel, who died at the age of fifteen months. Elected representative in 1920. A republican in politics.
