Representative from Lucas county, was born in Muskingum county, O., in 1857. When five years of age he emigrated with, his parents to Iowa, locating in Lucas county where he has since resided. When a young man Mr. Smith engaged in farming and feeding which has been his chief business. He is also interested in banking, being vice-president and director of the Russell State bank for the past fourteen years. He is president and director, of the Chariton ice cream and butter factory, and is a director of the Iowa Packing company of Des Moines. Mr. Smith is the inventor and patentee of the first adjustable road drag granted a patent in the United States. He has been treasurer of his school district for thirty-three continuous years. In the late war Mr. Smith served on the county council of defense and on the fuel administration. He is in church affiliation a Methodist. In politics a democrat.
