Representative of Polk county, Iowa, was born on a farm in the county, in 1879, moved with his parents to Emmet county and then to Wright county. He attended the common schools and entered Humboldt college, where he remained for seven years, first as a pupil and later as an instructor. In 1902 he took charge of the commercial department in the east high school, Des Moines, was cashier in the state treasurer's office and held a position in the United States treasury department. In 1906 he was elected cashier of the Iowa Trust and Savings bank of Des Moines, promoted to vice president and then to president, which position he still holds. He is a member of the Lutheran church and national treasurer of the Lutheran Brotherhood of America. He is a thirty-second degree Mason, Knight Templar and Knight of Pythias. In 1904 he married Miss Elizabeth Heggen to which union two boys, Herbert Henry and Gerhard Stanford have been born. Elected in 1918, 1920 and 1922. A republican in politics.
