Representative from Poweshiek county, Iowa; was born at Hartwick, Iowa, September 22, 1871. Being left fatherless at ten years of age and the oldest of six children he was deprived of a school or college education but was constantly a student of books as well as of affairs and in this way secured his education. He was married to Lizzie A. Korns, June 3, 1902. Eight children were born to this union, Roy E. of Chicago; Azel H. of Brooklyn, Iowa; Walter R. of Grinnell; Grace E. of Mason City; Ellsworth K. a student in Drake law school; Emma A., a student in Chicago university, and Howard and Arthur still at home. He has always been more or less identified with farming interests but at thirty years of age began an active practice as a live stock auctioneer and has enjoyed a state wide practice in the sales of pure bred stock. He was mayor of Grinnell, Iowa, where he now resides for three years before becoming a candidate for his present office. Elected representative in 1924. A republican in politics.
