Carroll County Democrat. Born on a farm near Carroll, May 8, 1884. Attended parochial and public schools. Married to Anna Hoffman, October 17, 1905. Father of eight children: Rev. O. H. Hermsen, Florence, Harold, Cletus, Norbert, Ernest, Rosemary, and Joseph. Always a farmer and dairyman. Served as assessor and census taker; president and secretary of Farm Bureau and Farmers Union; president and secretary of school board. Member of Roman Catholic church and Knights of Columbus, an officer of latter order for nearly twenty years; three terms as Grand Knight. Iowa delegate to national convention of K. of C. in 1907.
