Born November 7, 1894, in Austinville, Butler County, Iowa, and attended country school before completing his education at the high school in Allison. During the first years that followed he engaged in farming, real estate and various other business enterprises. He was always very active in Allison community affairs. Mr. Burma was a World War I veteran and first got into Republican Party politics several years after his return home when he was elected sheriff of Butler County and served from 1923 to 1937. He served four terms in the Iowa House of Representatives, from 1937-1945. During his last term, 1943-1945, he was Speaker of the House. Long interested in penology and law enforcement, he closed out his career in public service by serving as a Juvenile Probation Officer from 1954 until 1967 at which time he retired. For 10 years from 1944 to 1954 he was a member of the all-important Iowa Board of Control which directed affairs at all Iowa institutions. He was appointed to this post by Governor William Beardsley. Mr. Burma married Miss Kathryn Ruth McGinn June 30, 1924, in Nashua, Iowa. Throughout his life he was a faithful member of the United Church of Christ in Allison. He was very active in the Eastern Star and in the Masonic Lodge and the El Kahir Shrine of Cedar Rapids. He was also a member of the American Legion and Butler County Historical Society. Mr. Burma died December 8, 1974, in Allison, Iowa.
