Volga Clayton County Republican Born on a farm east of Volga, Iowa, Clayton county, September 12, 1887. Educated in the Volga public schools. Graduated from Upper Iowa university in 1913. Married Roberta Baskerville of Earlville, Iowa, June 14, 1916. Have three children, Mrs. George Bright of Springville, Iowa; Thomas R. Smith, Iowa State college, Ames; and John E. Smith attending Elkader Junior college. A nephew, Reichard J. Elwood, now in government journalistic service at Berlin, Germany, was raised in the home. Another nephew, Edward H. Smith, age 14, is living in the home now. Superintendent of city schools in North Dakota for 12 years. Owned general merchandise store at Volga for eight years. Now operating a farm near Volga, owned since 1931. Member Methodist church and Masonic lodge. Serving second term.

Elwood, U.S. Naval Aviation, was raised in the family. Another nephew, Edward H. Smith, age 12, is living in the home now. Superintendent in city schools in North Dakota for 12 years. Owned general merchandise store for eight years. Now operating a farm near Volga, owned since 1931. Member Methodist church and Masonic lodge. Serving first term.
