Des Moines Polk County Republican Born in Des Moines, Polk county, Iowa, on June 29, 1892; graduated from East Des Moines high school, 1911. Commissioned first lieutenant, U. S. Infantry at Fort Snelling, Minnesota, November, 1917; served in 88th Infantry Division, Camp Dodge, Iowa, for eight months, then to France for eleven months and honorably discharged in 1919. Passed Iowa State Bar examination in 1922 after four years of legal study under the judges of municipal courts. Appointed assistant Polk County Attorney in 1927 and served three terms and was then elected Polk County attorney for three terms. Former president of Iowa State County Attorneys' Association. Former chairman of Polk County Republican Central Committee. Member St. John's Lutheran church; Masonic bodies, American Legion. Married Ruth Hofmann at Omaha, Nebraska, 1933. One child, Carl A., by first marriage. A veteran of U. S. Marine service in World War II. Serving second term.
