Pomeroy Calhoun Co. Republican Born in Keokuk county, near Harper, on September 4, 1894, son of Joseph H. and Mary Hammen Baker. Attended local public schools and Trinity Business college. Served as deputy county treasurer of Calhoun county, 1915-18. Took up farming in 1919; in that business up to the present. Elected township assessor in 1920 and served in that capacity for 22 years. Elected chairman of the Calhoun County Agricultural Adjustment Administration in 1933 and headed that program for ten years. Took an active part in various war-time programs, including the chairmanship of the county U.S.D.A. War Board, Rationing Board, Bond and Red Cross drives. Member of Farm Bureau and past director. Married Sara E. Deegan, Riceville, Iowa, June 4, 1918. Father of four children, Maryetta, wife of Dr. Rex R. Harrington, stationed with a medical division of the U.S. Army in Germany; Gene of Lehigh, Iowa; Janet of Tacoma, Washington; and Jack, student at Iowa State college. Serving second term.

Was Deputy County Treasurer 1915-18. Moved to farm 1919 which he still operates. Township Assessor twenty-one years. Township Chairman Agricultural Adjustment Administration Program. County Chairman Agricultural Conservation Committee, ten years. Chairman County U.S.D.A., War Board and Farm Machinery Board. Member of Farm Bureau and former director. Served as a member of the County Warehouse Board. Married Sara E. Deegan of Riceville, Iowa, June 4, 1918. Father of four children, Marietta, wife of Dr. Rex Harrington, Tacoma, Washington, Janet, registered nurse, St. Paul, Minn., Lieut. Gene and Pfc. Jack, both in overseas service. Member Knights of Columbus. Serving first term.
