He was born in Harpersfield, Ashtabula county, Ohio, May 27, 1817; received a common school education; is by occupation a farmer; he went to Wisconsin in 1848, and settled at Farmington, Jefferson county; went to Fayette county, Iowa, in 1851, and elected to the Assembly for two years in 1852; returned to Wisconsin in 1855, and was elected to the Senate from Jefferson county in 1860. He married Elizabeth Brown of Monroe County, Ohio, on December 22, 1855. He operated a hotel known as Hancock House, and later moved to a nearby farm. He was elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly from Waushara County in 1871. He died March 30, 1881.
