Born in 1794, in Bloomsburg, Columbia County, Pennsylvania, to Edward Thornton and Ruth Willets. Following his service as a teamster in the War of 1812, he moved to Tippecanoe County, Indiana, later settling in Grandview Township, Louisa County, Iowa, in 1835. He married Catherine Black sometime after moving to Iowa. He represented Louisa County in the House of Representatives of the First Legislative Assembly of the Iowa Territory from 1838 to 1839. He died in Iowa on December 23, 1840.
