Laurens Pocahontas County Republican. Graduate of the Laurens public schools and the State University of Iowa. A former teacher, and school board president of the Laurens public schools. Member of the D.A.R., Woman's Progressive Club, the State Historical Society, the Laurens Library Board, and the Order of the Eastern Star. Past department president and past national vice president of the American Legion Auxiliary. Attends the Methodist Church. Mrs. Hakes is the widow of the late Mr. Ledgard B. Hakes, a former Laurens merchant, and a partner in the firm of M. and J. R. Hakes, wholesale grocers, located in Laurens. Has one daughter and one son. Is the daughter of the late United States Congressman Fred C. Gilchrist. Serving first term.
