This bill is being lobbied by the home building associations of the state. Their concern is cost. The cost of the addition of say, 50 AFCI receptacles plus a service panel surge protector to a new home is about 0.396% of the cost of the home based on a $450,000.00 new home. The cost of providing 5 AFCI circuit breakers (to cover 50regular nonAFCI receptacles) plus the same surge protector is about 0.0428% of the cost of a new home selling price of $450,000.00 All equipment prices quoted in this comment were retail prices at Lowes Home Improvement Davenport, Iowa. I can't understand why the promoters of this bill are sacrificing electrical safety, in the form of AFCI protection and electronic equipment device protection by surge protection for such a small additional cost compared to the cost of the dwelling. I am also sure that a new home buyer would have instant remorse when realizing that the newest electrical protection technologies have not been built into this structure

I would like any new home I purchase to be as safe as modern technology can provide. This bill serves no useful purpose, and needs to be voted down for that reason. No on SF 2374.
