Please vote OPPOSED to HSB 285. Criminalizing police for not helping ICE would be detrimental to community trust, local autonomy, and the integrity of law enforcement's primary missionprotecting all citizens, regardless of their immigration status. Police are tasked with maintaining public safety, while ICE is a federal agency responsible for immigrationrelated issues. Forcing local police to act as an extension of ICE blurs these lines and can lead to overreach and abuses of power. The prevention of such overreach should be recognized and rewarded, not penalized with a felony.

Please vote no on this bill. The police should be penalized for not wanting to help ICE, if they do not want to.

I am opposed to HSB 285. ICE does not need the help of local peace officers. They can do their work and our cops can do theirs. Mixing the two is overreach and not in the best interest of Iowans. Vote NO.

I oppose HSB 285. Criminalizing police for not acting with ICE would be detrimental to community law enforcement. Local police must establish trust in their communities to protect ALL of their residents. Forcing local police to act in coordination with ICE in a way that damages that trust is harmful to communities. Let local law enforcement determine what would best keep their community residents safe. Don't punish local police departments by criminalizing what is in the community's best interest. Vote no on HSB285.

Please OPPOSE HSB 285. Local law enforcement doesn't need a sword hanging over their heads regarding their duties. Let them do their job, and maintain community relationships, without the threat of penalty if they don't do another agency's job.

Voting against HSB 285 is crucial due to significant concerns regarding overreach and the potential for abuse of power. This bill represents a troubling shift in our national direction, as it blurs the lines between local law enforcement and immigration enforcement. Police should remain focused on community safety, and not be legally obligated to assist ICE, which will lead to mistrust and fear within our communities. Allowing law enforcement to engage in immigration enforcement undermines the principles of justice and equity, ultimately harming the very fabric of our society.

I oppose this bill. I used to be a corrections officer in this states largest county. It's the white people filling those jails. IOWANS.I'm also from a rural county that relies upon immigration for farm workers. No one has the budget, space or time in their jails, if they even kept up their federal inspections and certifications.Get a life Holt. Stop punishing decent hard working families who keep your schools open,Dension from becoming a ghost town and your wife employed! You're a small petty man making up for many personal grievances & insecurities, you have yet to deal with by punishing people you see as less than in this state that you don't want here.Might as well wear a white rob on the house floor at this point. Not a single one of us want to hear any Republican talk about freedom or recite the state motto with the 100s of discriminatiory bills that have come out of Judicary & GOP before the end of Funnel Week.

I like this bill. These are the federal laws created to protect Americans. If an Iowa law enforcement officer can "just say no" to whatever laws he/she wants, then we will have more murders, rapes, and violence in our communities just as Denver CO and other areas now experience. A sheriff must follow the law. If it takes a fine, so be it. A police officer is hired to protect and serve based upon our laws. Illegal immigration is a crime. Living in the shadows is a dangerous way to live. Enforce the laws, Congress needs to correct immigration process; the states must follow the laws designed to protect all, unlike Laken Riley, Molly Tibbets, and Sarah Root who were not protected from illegal immigrants.

I am opposed to HSB 285 for several reasons. First, the bill is not clear on what immigration laws are to be enforced by Iowa law enforcement officers. Would that be state laws or the federal laws that are part of the responsibility of Immigration Customs Enforcement? Iowa law enforcement officers are not trained in ICE immigration work. Local officers are responsible to local communities that include immigrant and refugee members. Second, the bill severely threatens Iowa law enforcement officers who focus on the work they were trained to do, even to the point of losing their jobs. These officers may have spent years building trust with immigrant and refugee community leaders and members, trust that they value and need to maintain. Third and most important, this bill indirectly threatens all immigrant and refugee people in Iowa with the fear of being targets at any time by all law enforcement officers. Threats are not how Iowans should treat family, friends, or members of our communities. This bill should not move forward. Vote NO on HSB 285.

Please vote No on this bill. ICE and Iowa Police Officers are two separate groups. It is overreach to try to combine them and will harm harmful effects on all of our communities. Leave local government to local officials and ICE will act separately.
