The American Lung Association strongly supports HSB 148 and urges the subcommittee to quickly pass this legislation and finally afford smokefree air protections to Iowa casino workers, patrons and visitors. For 17 years, the landmark Smokefree Air Act has protected most Iowans from secondhand smoke in enclosed public places; however, those protections are unfortunately not afforded to Iowans who work at and visit casinos. In fact, Iowa is just one of two states in the Midwest that allows smoking in casinos within the state. Everyone deserves the chance to lead a healthy life, and that means ensuring casino employees have a safe work environment free from the health harms associated with secondhand smoke. The Lung Association asks you to move forward and quickly recommend HSB 148 for passage.
