1 1 Section 1. Section 22.7, Code 2001, is amended by adding
1 2 the following new subsection:
1 3 NEW SUBSECTION. 43. The social security number, date of
1 4 birth, address, and reason for application of a person
1 5 applying for a permit pursuant to chapter 724, and any other
1 6 related information that is required to be kept confidential
1 7 by federal law.
1 8 Sec. 2 Section 724.23, Code 2001, is amended to read as
1 9 follows:
1 10 724.23 RECORDS KEPT BY COMMISSIONER – INFORMATION
1 11 REQUESTS.
1 12 The commissioner of public safety shall maintain a
1 13 permanent record of all valid permits to carry weapons and of
1 14 current permit revocations. A person making a request to the
1 15 department of public safety for information contained in
1 16 weapons and pistol or revolver applications made pursuant to
1 17 this chapter must state the reason for the request. In
1 18 addition, the department may conduct a criminal history data
1 19 check on the person making the request.
1 20 EXPLANATION
1 21 This bill establishes the confidentiality provisions in the
1 22 public records chapter pertaining to weapons and pistol or
1 23 revolver permit applications. The bill provides that
1 24 information revealing an applicant's social security number,
1 25 date of birth, address, and reason for application shall be
1 26 kept confidential. Other related information required to be
1 27 kept confidential by federal law is also protected by the
1 28 bill's language. In addition, a person making a request to
1 29 the department of public safety for information contained in
1 30 weapons and pistol or revolver permit applications must give a
1 31 reason for the request and may be subject to a criminal
1 32 history data check.
