29   treasurer shall validate the special plates in the

30   same manner as regular registration plates are
31   validated under this section.
32     Sec. 4.  Section 321.34, subsections 10 and 10A,
33   Code 1999, are amended to read as follows:
34     10.  FIRE FIGHTER PLATES.  The owner of a motor
35   vehicle subject to registration pursuant to section
36   321.109, subsection 1, light delivery truck, panel
37   delivery truck, pickup, motor home, multipurpose
38   vehicle, motorcycle, trailer, or travel trailer who is
39   a current or former member of a paid or volunteer fire
40   department, may upon written application to the
41   department, order special registration plates,
42   designed by the department in cooperation with
43   representatives designated by the Iowa fire fighters'
44   associations, which plates signify that the applicant
45   is a current or former member of a paid or volunteer
46   fire department.  The application shall be approved by
47   the department, in consultation with representatives
48   designated by the Iowa fire fighters' associations,
49   and the special registration plates shall be issued to
50   the applicant in exchange for the registration plates

 1   previously issued to the person.  The fee for the
 2   special plates shall be twenty-five dollars which
 3   shall be in addition to the regular annual
 4   registration fee.  The department shall validate the
 5   special plates in the same manner as regular
 6   registration plates are validated under this section
 7   at the regular annual registration fee.
 8     10A.  EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES PLATES.  The owner
 9   of a motor vehicle subject to registration pursuant to
10   section 321.109, subsection 1, light delivery truck,
11   panel delivery truck, pickup, motor home, multipurpose
12   vehicle, motorcycle, trailer, or travel trailer who is
13   a current member of a paid or volunteer emergency
14   medical services agency may, upon written application
15   to the department, order special registration plates,
16   designed by the department in cooperation with
17   representatives designated by the Iowa emergency
18   medical services association, which plates signify
19   that the applicant is a current member of a paid or
20   volunteer emergency medical services agency.  The
21   application shall be approved by the department, in
22   consultation with representatives designated by the
23   Iowa emergency medical services association, and the
24   special registration plates shall be issued to the
25   applicant in exchange for the registration plates
26   previously issued to the person.  The fee for the
27   special plates shall be twenty-five dollars which
