PAG LIN 1 1 1 2 SENATE FILE 2023 1 3 1 4 AN ACT 1 5 RELATING TO THE ISSUANCE OF UNITED STATES ARMED FORCES 1 6 RETIRED SPECIAL PLATES, TO THE ISSUANCE OF EX-PRISONER 1 7 OF WAR MOTOR VEHICLE REGISTRATION PLATES TO SURVIVING 1 8 SPOUSES AND TO THE ISSUANCE OF EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES 1 9 MOTOR VEHICLE REGISTRATION PLATES AND ESTABLISHING FEES. 1 10 1 11 BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF IOWA: 1 12 1 13 Section 1. Section 321.34, subsection 8A, unnumbered 1 14 paragraph 2, Code Supplement 1997, is amended to read as 1 15 follows: 1 16 The surviving spouse of a person who was issued special 1 17 plates under this subsection may continue to use or apply for 1 18 and use the special plates subject to registration of the 1 19 special plates in the surviving spouse's name and upon payment 1 20 of the annual registration fee. If the surviving spouse 1 21 remarries, the surviving spouse shall return the special 1 22 plates to the department and the department shall issue 1 23 regular registration plates to the surviving spouse. 1 24 Sec. 2. Section 321.34, subsection 19, Code Supplement 1 25 1997, is amended to read as follows: 1 26 19. UNITED STATES ARMED FORCES RETIRED SPECIAL PLATES. An 1 27 owner referred to in subsection 12 who is a retired member of 1 28 the United States armed forces, may, upon written application 1 29 to the department and upon presentation of satisfactory proof 1 30 of membership, order special registration plates with a United 1 31 States armed forces retired processed emblem. The emblem 1 32 shall be designed by the department in consultation with 1 33 service organizations. The application is subject to approval 1 34 by the department. For purposes of this subsection, a person 1 35 is considered to be retired if the person served twenty years 2 1 or longer in the United States armed forces or is a person who 2 2 served a minimum of ten years and received an honorable 2 3 discharge from service due to a medical disqualification. 2 4 Sec. 3. Section 321.34, Code Supplement 1997, is amended 2 5 by adding the following new subsection: 2 6 NEW SUBSECTION. 10A. EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES PLATES. 2 7 The owner of a motor vehicle subject to registration pursuant 2 8 to section 321.109, subsection 1, light delivery truck, panel 2 9 delivery truck, pickup, motor home, multipurpose vehicle, or 2 10 travel trailer who is a current member of a paid or volunteer 2 11 emergency medical services agency, may upon written 2 12 application to the department, order special registration 2 13 plates, designed by the department in cooperation with 2 14 representatives designated by the Iowa emergency medical 2 15 services association, which plates signify that the applicant 2 16 is a current member of a paid or volunteer emergency medical 2 17 services agency. The application shall be approved by the 2 18 department, in consultation with representatives designated by 2 19 the Iowa emergency medical services association, and the 2 20 special registration plates shall be issued to the applicant 2 21 in exchange for the registration plates previously issued to 2 22 the person. The fee for the special plates shall be twenty- 2 23 five dollars which shall be in addition to the regular annual 2 24 registration fee. The department shall validate the special 2 25 plates in the same manner as regular registration plates are 2 26 validated under this section at the regular annual 2 27 registration fee. 2 28 2 29 2 30 2 31 MARY E.
