  1  1          SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO.    
  1  2                BY  SZYMONIAK AND REDFERN
  1  3         (COMPANION TO LSB 2165HH BY GRUNDBERG)
  1  4 A Concurrent Resolution designating March 1997 as 
  1  5    Iowa Women's History Month.
  1  6    WHEREAS, Iowa women of every race, class, and
  1  7 ethnic background have made historic contributions to
  1  8 the growth and strength of our state and nation in
  1  9 countless recorded and unrecorded ways; and
  1 10    WHEREAS, Iowa women have played and continue to
  1 11 play a critical economic, cultural, and social role by
  1 12 constituting a significant portion of the labor force,
  1 13 working both inside and outside the home; and
  1 14    WHEREAS, Iowa women were particularly important in
  1 15 the establishment of early charitable, philanthropic,
  1 16 and cultural institutions in our state and the nation;
  1 17 and
  1 18    WHEREAS, Iowa women were leaders in the
  1 19 abolitionist movement, the emancipation movement, the
  1 20 industrial labor movement, the women's suffrage
  1 21 movement, the civil rights movement, and the peace
  1 22 movement, creating a more fair and just society for
  1 23 all; and
  1 24    WHEREAS, despite these many contributions and the
  1 25 contributions of women throughout the world, the role
  1 26 of women is consistently overlooked and undervalued in
  1 27 literature, teaching, and the study of history; NOW
  1 28 THEREFORE,
  1 29    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, THE HOUSE OF
  1 30 REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING, That the General Assembly
  2  1 designate the month of March 1997 as Iowa Women's
  2  2 History Month, and invite the citizens of Iowa to
  2  3 discover a new world of people and events in history.
  2  4    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the General Assembly
  2  5 request that the Governor issue a proclamation calling
  2  6 upon the people of Iowa to observe this month with
  2  7 appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities.
