1 1 Section 1. NEW SECTION. 28E.28B TAX LEVIES.
1 2 Each unified law enforcement district tax levy authorized
1 3 pursuant to section 28E.22 prior to July 1, 1983, which
1 4 continued to be collected for a period subsequent to July 1,
1 5 1983, or continues to be collected notwithstanding the
1 6 expiration of the five-year period specified by the referendum
1 7 which authorized the levy, is hereby legalized and deemed
1 8 valid as if the levy had been authorized subsequent to July 1,
1 9 1983.
1 10 Sec. 2. EFFECTIVE DATE. This Act, being deemed of
1 11 immediate importance, takes effect upon enactment.
1 12 EXPLANATION
1 13 Prior to July 1, 1983, section 28E.22, regarding the
1 14 referendum for imposition of a unified law enforcement
1 15 district tax levy, limited the length of the levy to five
1 16 years. 1983 Iowa Acts, chapter 79, eliminated the five-year
1 17 limitation, effective July 1, 1983.
1 18 This bill legalizes unified law enforcement district tax
1 19 levies, subject to the five-year limitation, which were
1 20 authorized prior to July 1, 1983, and which continued to be
1 21 collected for more than five years or which are currently
1 22 being collected.
1 23 The bill takes effect upon enactment.
