1 1 SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO.
1 2 BY DVORSKY, NEUHAUSER, and HAMMOND
1 3 A Concurrent Resolution honoring Ms. Jorie Graham, the
1 4 1996 Pulitizer Prize winner in the field of poetry.
1 5 WHEREAS, Ms. Jorie Graham is a graduate of New York
1 6 University and the University of Iowa Writer's
1 7 Workshop, and has taught at several universities,
1 8 including Columbia University and the University of
1 9 Iowa; and
1 10 WHEREAS, Ms. Graham is a published author of
1 11 several books and pieces of poetry and prose in many
1 12 magazines and journals, including the prestigious Iowa
1 13 Review, published at the University of Iowa; and
1 14 WHEREAS, Ms. Graham possesses diverse experience as
1 15 a writer, poet, editor, and teacher; and
1 16 WHEREAS, Ms. Graham has won the 1996 Pulitzer Prize
1 17 in Poetry, presented by Columbia University, for her
1 18 book entitled "The Dream of the Unified Field: New
1 19 and Selected Poems"; and
1 20 WHEREAS, the Pulitzer Prize is the most prestigious
1 21 award for writing granted in America; and
1 22 WHEREAS, Ms. Graham is the twenty-third faculty
1 23 member or student from the University of Iowa to have
1 24 won a Pulitizer Prize, and therefore brings further
1 25 distinction to the University of Iowa and its Writer's
1 26 Workshop, which is widely regarded as the premier
1 27 creative writing university degree program in the
1 28 United States; NOW THEREFORE,
1 29 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, THE HOUSE OF
1 30 REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING, That the General Assembly
2 1 of Iowa recognize and honor Ms. Jorie Graham for her
2 2 lifetime of work and achievements, and especially for
2 3 her outstanding accomplishment in winning the 1996
2 4 Pulitzer Prize in Poetry.
2 5 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That an official copy of
2 6 this resolution be prepared for presentation to Ms.
2 7 Graham.
