1 2 BY DVORSKY and NEUHAUSER
1 3 A Senate Concurrent Resolution congratulating Coach
1 4 Dan Gable and the University of Iowa Hawkeye
1 5 Wrestling Team for winning the National
1 6 Collegiate Athletic Association's 1996 team
1 7 championship.
1 8 WHEREAS, Coach Dan Gable's Hawkeye wrestling team
1 9 recently won the NCAA's 1996 championship, Coach
1 10 Gable's 14th as head coach at the University of Iowa
1 11 and the 15th national title in the university's
1 12 history; and
1 13 WHEREAS, Iowa's team was the only team in the
1 14 nation to qualify its entire ten-man team and three of
1 15 those wrestlers, Bill Zudick, Joe Williams, and Daryl
1 16 Weber, won individual national titles; and
1 17 WHEREAS, this recent win is just the latest in Dan
1 18 Gable's extraordinarily successful career, which began
1 19 in 1977 when the Hawkeye wrestling team claimed a
1 20 third place national finish and earned Dan Gable the
1 21 NCAA's Rookie Coach of the Year honor; and
1 22 WHEREAS, Dan Gable has won every Big Ten wrestling
1 23 title and nine consecutive NCAA championships since
1 24 1977 and coached 40 NCAA and 104 Big Ten champions;
1 25 and
1 26 WHEREAS, Iowans are justly proud of Dan Gable and
1 27 his outstanding wrestling program at Iowa, the
1 28 national fame he brought Iowa with his win of the gold
1 29 medal at the 1972 Summer Olympics, and his success in
1 30 coaching American Olympic wrestling teams and high
2 1 school teams; and
2 2 WHEREAS, Iowa's 1996 championship Hawkeye wrestling
2 3 team brought national honor to Iowa and thrilled fans
2 4 across the nation; NOW THEREFORE,
2 5 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, THE HOUSE OF
2 6 REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING, That the General Assembly
2 7 congratulate Coach Dan Gable and the University of
2 8 Iowa Hawkeye Wrestling Team on their magnificent
2 9 season and express the appreciation of Iowa's citizens
2 10 for the national honor and the excitement Coach Gable
2 11 and his team brought to the State of Iowa.
