PAG LIN 1 1 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. ___ 1 2 BY MARTIN, HARPER, DODERER, JOCHUM, METCALF, 1 3 GRUNDBERG, NELSON of Marshall, JACOBS, MASCHER, 1 4 THOMSON, MERTZ, BOGGESS, NELSON of Pottawattamie, 1 5 HAMMITT, GREINER, GARMAN, BURNETT, BERNAU, SIEGRIST, 1 6 WITT, HANSON, BRANSTAD, CORMACK, LAMBERTI, CORNELIUS, 1 7 TEIG, ARNOLD, HUSEMAN, VANDE HOEF, DINKLA, LARSON, 1 8 SUKUP, VAN FOSSEN, CORBETT, WEIDMAN, DISNEY, BLODGETT, 1 9 BRUNKHORST, BODDICKER, HOUSER, GRIES, WELTER, MAIN, 1 10 NUTT, KLEMME, SALTON, HEATON, GREIG, SCHULTE, COON, 1 11 DRAKE, MEYER, RENKEN, KREMER, VEENSTRA, HARRISON, 1 12 and HALVORSON 1 13 A Concurrent Resolution recognizing the seventy-fifth 1 14 anniversary of the founding of the League of Women 1 15 Voters of Iowa. 1 16 WHEREAS, Iowan Carrie Chapman Catt founded the 1 17 League of Women Voters on February 14, 1920, to help 1 18 20 million newly enfranchised women carry out their 1 19 long due voting responsibilities, and the organization 1 20 has for 75 years worked to be a voice for citizens and 1 21 a force for change; and 1 22 WHEREAS, the League of Women Voters has provided 1 23 nonpartisan information on candidates and issues for 1 24 elections, encouraged voter registration and informed 1 25 voting, helped generations of voters understand the 1 26 structure and function of government, provided 1 27 balanced information on public policy issues to the 1 28 citizens, and worked to achieve government policies 1 29 that promote the public interest; and 1 30 WHEREAS, the vigorous history of the League of 2 1 Women Voters of Iowa includes successfully causing the 2 2 removal of the word "male" from the Iowa Constitution 2 3 as a qualification for candidacy to the Iowa 2 4 Legislature in 1925; working for passage of the Iowa 2 5 legislation on aid to dependent children in 1943; 2 6 assisting in the establishment of the Iowa Legislative 2 7 Council, the Legislative Service Bureau, the Ethics 2 8 and Campaign Disclosure Board, and the legislative 2 9 Public Information Office, which is now known as the 2 10 Legislative Information Office; assisting in achieving 2 11 home rule for Iowa's cities and counties; assisting in 2 12 the establishment of the area education agencies; and 2 13 engendering the passage of many other landmark pieces 2 14 of legislation; and 2 15 WHEREAS, the League of Women Voters of Iowa, which 2 16 was officially organized in October 1919, remains a 2 17 unique political, educational, multi-issue, activist, 2 18 grassroots citizen action organization; NOW THEREFORE, 2 19 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, THE 2 20 SENATE CONCURRING, That the Iowa General Assembly 2 21 recognize and commend the League of Women Voters of 2 22 Iowa for its many accomplishments and years of service 2 23 to the citizens of Iowa, commemorate its seventy-fifth 2 24 anniversary, and offer best wishes for continued 2 25 growth and success in the future. 2 26 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this 2 27 Resolution be forwarded to Abigail P.
