1 3 A Concurrent Resolution to urge the Governor and the citizens
1 4 of Iowa to make available to the people of Japan all
1 5 appropriate aid and assistance to help the people of Japan
1 6 recover from the disastrous earthquake of January 17, 1995.
1 7 WHEREAS, a disastrous earthquake in western Japan
1 8 in the early morning hours of January 17, 1995, caused
1 9 unimaginable damage, suffering, and loss of life; and
1 10 WHEREAS, Iowa City's Japanese Sister City,
1 11 Amagasaki, is located near the earthquake's epicenter
1 12 and suffered damage and loss in the earthquake; and
1 13 WHEREAS, Iowans, too, have known the horror of huge
1 14 natural disasters, as when the Great Floods of 1993
1 15 inundated our cities and farm fields and caused
1 16 immense damage, suffering, and loss; and
1 17 WHEREAS, people from around the nation and the
1 18 world responded to our needs by donating supplies,
1 19 food and water, labor, technical assistance, heavy
1 20 equipment, money, and other very valuable and much
1 21 needed forms of assistance; and
1 22 WHEREAS, the people of Iowa remember with deep and
1 23 enduring gratitude the compassion shown to us by the
1 24 people of Japan, especially that shown to us by the
1 25 citizens of Yamanashi Prefecture, our Sister State,
1 26 and our eight Sister Cities, when we were suffering
1 27 our great natural disaster; NOW THEREFORE,
1 28 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, THE
1 29 SENATE CONCURRING, That the Iowa General Assembly
1 30 respectfully requests the Governor of the State of
2 1 Iowa and the citizens of the State of Iowa to affirm
2 2 their duties as citizens of the world and offer all
2 3 appropriate aid and assistance to relieve the
2 4 suffering of our Japanese brothers and sisters, and to
2 5 help them start the process of recovery and of
2 6 rebuilding their lives and their communities.
