PAG LIN 1 1 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. ___ 1 2 BY KRAMER, ANGELO, BEHN, BLACK, BOETTGER, BOLKCOM, 1 3 CONNOLLY, DEARDEN, DELUHERY, DRAKE, FIEGEN, FINK, 1 4 FLYNN, FRAISE, FREEMAN, GASKILL, GREINER, GRONSTAL, 1 5 HAMMOND, HANSEN, HARPER, HOLVECK, HORN, HOUSER, 1 6 IVERSON, JENSEN, KIBBIE, KING, LAMBERTI, LUNDBY, 1 7 MADDOX, McCOY, McKEAN, McKIBBEN, McKINLEY, MILLER, 1 8 REDFERN, REDWINE, REHBERG, RITTMER, SCHUERER, SEXTON, 1 9 SHEARER, SOUKUP, TINSMAN, VEENSTRA, and ZIEMAN 1 10 A Resolution designating June 15, 2002, as Juneteenth 1 11 National Freedom Day. 1 12 WHEREAS, the third Saturday in June is celebrated 1 13 as National Freedom Day and is also known as 1 14 Emancipation Day; and 1 15 WHEREAS, Juneteenth National Freedom Day is the 1 16 oldest known African-American celebration of the end 1 17 of slavery in the United States and occurred on or 1 18 about June nineteenth; and 1 19 WHEREAS, Juneteenth National Freedom Day celebrates 1 20 the meaning and importance of the Emancipation 1 21 Proclamation, which ended slavery in the United 1 22 States; and 1 23 WHEREAS, spontaneous celebrations erupted 1 24 throughout the United States when African-Americans 1 25 learned that they were free; and 1 26 WHEREAS, all citizens of Iowa are encouraged to 1 27 observe the day in a manner that emphasizes the 1 28 meaning and importance of the Emancipation 1 29 Proclamation; NOW THEREFORE, 1 30 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the third 2 1 Saturday in June, June 15, 2002, is designated 2 2 Juneteenth National Freedom Day. 2 3 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Senate encourages 2 4 the citizens of Iowa to recognize and celebrate the 2 5 importance of this day to every person who cherishes 2 6 liberty and equality for all people. 2 7 LSB 6176SS 79 2 8 av/pj/5
