PAG LIN 1 1 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. ___ 1 2 BY REDWINE 1 3 A Senate Resolution honoring Goodwill Industries 1 4 International in its centennial year. 1 5 WHEREAS, Goodwill Industries International, Inc. 1 6 turns 100 years old in 2002; and 1 7 WHEREAS, Goodwill Industries International is the 1 8 world's largest private sector employer of people with 1 9 disabilities and has served more than 5 million people 1 10 in its first 100 years; and 1 11 WHEREAS, Goodwill member organizations help 1 12 individuals succeed in the workplace and in life by 1 13 providing job training, job placement, and support for 1 14 people with physical, financial, and educational 1 15 challenges; and 1 16 WHEREAS, five autonomous Goodwills serve the State 1 17 of Iowa, with services provided in all quadrants of 1 18 the state, including Sioux City, Waterloo, Des Moines, 1 19 Council Bluffs, and Iowa City; and 1 20 WHEREAS, the five Goodwills serving Iowa make a 1 21 significant contribution in the reduction, reuse, and 1 22 recycling of goods by diverting millions of pounds of 1 23 household goods from Iowa landfills each year; and 1 24 WHEREAS, the founder of Goodwill Industries 1 25 International, Dr. Edgar J. Helms, had Iowa roots, 1 26 having arrived in Iowa by covered wagon in 1865, 1 27 spending his youth on a farm near East Lake Okoboji, 1 28 working on newspapers in Spirit Lake, Peterson, and 1 29 Sioux Rapids, and receiving his college degree from 1 30 Cornell College in Mount Vernon; and 2 1 WHEREAS, the vision of Goodwill Industries is more 2 2 than 100 years old, but the concept and practice 2 3 remains relevant today, with 180 member organizations 2 4 in the United States, Canada, and the Pacific Basin, 2 5 and another 45 associate member organizations located 2 6 in 34 countries; and 2 7 WHEREAS, Goodwill Industries has changed and 2 8 adapted today to meet the needs of society; the three 2 9 concepts of Goodwill as envisioned by Dr. Helms 2 10 Community, Independence, Dignity remain constant 2 11 and are embodied in the provision of work which 2 12 enables individuals to contribute and participate in 2 13 the economic and social vitality of the community, 2 14 which gives the satisfaction and freedom of self- 2 15 support, and which fosters self-esteem and the pride 2 16 of accomplishment; and 2 17 WHEREAS, the Council of Iowa Goodwill Industries 2 18 served more than 4,000 men, women, and children in 2 19 2001; NOW THEREFORE, 2 20 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That Dr. Edgar J. 2 21 Helms be regarded as an Iowa treasure, whose 2 22 leadership and vision gave birth to Goodwill 2 23 Industries International, Inc., and to the 2 24 establishment of five member Goodwills serving the 2 25 State of Iowa, thereby creating opportunities for and 2 26 helping thousands of Iowans toward brighter futures; 2 27 and 2 28 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Senate extends its 2 29 thanks and congratulations to Goodwill Industries 2 30 International, Inc. and the five Goodwills that serve 3 1 the State of Iowa as they celebrate their centennial 3 2 year in 2002; and 3 3 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Secretary of the 3 4 Senate prepare an official copy of this Resolution to 3 5 be presented to Goodwill Industries International, 3 6 Inc. and the five Goodwills that serve the State of 3 7 Iowa. 3 8 LSB 5839SS 79 3 9 rj/pj/5
