1 2 BY IVERSON AND GRONSTAL
1 3 A Resolution honoring Nobel Peace Prize Laureate
1 4 Dr. Norman E. Borlaug, and recognizing his
1 5 contributions to alleviating world hunger and
1 6 malnutrition, including the founding of the World
1 7 Food Prize.
1 8 WHEREAS, October 2001 marks the fifteenth
1 9 anniversary of the founding of Iowa's World Food
1 10 Prize; and
1 11 WHEREAS, the year 2001 is the one hundredth
1 12 anniversary of awarding the Nobel Peace Prize; and
1 13 WHEREAS, in 1970 Dr. Norman E. Borlaug received the
1 14 Nobel Peace Prize as father of the "Green Revolution"
1 15 which has resulted in saving millions of human lives
1 16 in the world by averting famine and alleviating hunger
1 17 and malnutrition; and
1 18 WHEREAS, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Dr. Norman E.
1 19 Borlaug envisioned the creation of the World Food
1 20 Prize, which would be the equivalent of the Nobel
1 21 Peace Prize for the advancement of human development
1 22 by improving the quality, quantity, and availability
1 23 of food in the world; and
1 24 WHEREAS, the World Food Prize Foundation has been
1 25 endowed by Des Moines philanthropist Mr. John Ruan,
1 26 which has enabled the annual $250,000 award to be
1 27 presented to laureates from around the world,
1 28 including the People's Republic of China, Mexico,
1 29 Bangladesh, India, Switzerland, the United Kingdom,
1 30 and the United States; and
2 1 WHEREAS, the General Assembly and the State of Iowa
2 2 have for 10 years demonstrated a stalwart commitment
2 3 to the World Food Prize; and
2 4 WHEREAS, on October 18 and 19 of 2001, the World
2 5 Food Prize Foundation will conduct an International
2 6 Symposium in Des Moines, in honor of Dr. Borlaug; NOW
2 7 THEREFORE,
2 8 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That Iowans now and
2 9 in the future recognize Dr. Borlaug, a revered citizen
2 10 of this state and this nation, whose lasting
2 11 contributions to improving the world's food supply and
2 12 establishing the World Food Prize have benefited human
2 13 development and inspired persons to continue in his
2 14 great work; and
2 15 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the State of Iowa, on
2 16 behalf of its citizens, expresses its great admiration
2 17 for Dr. Borlaug and conveys its sincere appreciation
2 18 for his lifetime dedication to uplifting the poor and
2 19 feeding the hungry; and
2 20 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That communities of Iowa
2 21 take actions necessary to recognize Dr. Borlaug and
2 22 commemorate his achievements during the fifteenth
2 23 anniversary year of the World Food Prize; and
2 24 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That educational
2 25 institutions in this state take actions necessary to
2 26 ensure that Dr. Borlaug's achievements and his
2 27 contributions to humanity are known to all students of
2 28 the state; and
2 29 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the General Assembly
2 30 endorse a proposal that October 16 of each year, World
3 1 Food Day, be known in this state as Dr. Norman E.
3 2 Borlaug Day, to ensure that present and future
3 3 generations of Iowans will have occasion to honor Dr.
3 4 Borlaug and recall his heroic contribution to
3 5 humanity.
