1 2 BY VEENSTRA, BEHN, SCHUERER, JOHNSON, GREINER,
1 3 REDWINE, GASKILL, ZIEMAN, REHBERG, McKINLEY,
1 4 and BOETTGER
1 5 A Resolution designating May 3, 2001, as statewide
1 6 Prayer Day.
1 7 WHEREAS, a "Prayer Day" was first proclaimed by the
1 8 Continental Congress in 1775; and
1 9 WHEREAS, it is fitting that we in the state of Iowa
1 10 observe a day when we acknowledge our many blessings
1 11 and express gratitude to God while recognizing the
1 12 need to strengthen the religious and moral values in
1 13 our land; and
1 14 WHEREAS, the national association for prayer
1 15 promotes a statewide "Prayer Day" in Iowa to bring
1 16 peace, unity, and healing to our people; and
1 17 WHEREAS, a number of states across America will
1 18 recognize the power of prayer by participating in
1 19 bringing people together to pray for our schools,
1 20 cities, states, and nation; and
1 21 WHEREAS, students at all levels of education should
1 22 be encouraged to begin their school day with the
1 23 pledge of allegiance, to begin the school day on a
1 24 positive note and reintroduce a worthy patriotic
1 25 program forgotten by many, and instill some
1 26 traditional values and morals, which are much needed
1 27 in this society; NOW THEREFORE,
1 28 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That May 3, 2001, be
1 29 designated as "Iowa Prayer Day" and all citizens are
1 30 urged to reflect on the role of prayer as a
2 1 fundamental part of the nation's heritage and that, in
2 2 seeking divine guidance, there is unifying power for
2 3 citizens from a diverse number of religious
2 4 backgrounds.
