1 3 BARTZ, REHBERG, DRAKE, BEHN, McKINLEY, BOETTGER,
1 4 ANGELO, LAMBERTI, and KRAMER
1 5 A Senate Resolution to prominently display the Ten
1 6 Commandments in the Iowa Senate chamber.
1 7 WHEREAS, President Ronald Reagan spoke in Moscow in
1 8 May 1988, saying that democracy is a system of
1 9 constraints of power to keep politics and government
1 10 secondary to the true sources of value found only in
1 11 family and faith; and
1 12 WHEREAS, President George Washington stated in his
1 13 farewell address that reason and experience both
1 14 forbid an expectation that national morality can
1 15 prevail in exclusion of religious principle; and
1 16 WHEREAS, the Ten Commandments contain fundamental
1 17 legal principles that provide a basis for the system
1 18 of law, justice, and social order in Iowa and the
1 19 United States; and
1 20 WHEREAS, the United States House of Representatives
1 21 has declared that display of the Ten Commandments in
1 22 the buildings of states and political subdivisions of
1 23 states should be a power reserved to the states; and
1 24 WHEREAS, the Iowa Senate finds that the success of
1 25 this nation and this state will rest on citizens'
1 26 ability to govern themselves according to the Ten
1 27 Commandments; NOW THEREFORE,
1 28 BE IT RESOLVED, That the Ten Commandments shall be
1 29 prominently displayed in the Iowa Senate chamber; and
1 30 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Iowa Senate
2 1 encourages all other Iowa state governmental bodies
2 2 and political subdivisions to also prominently display
2 3 the Ten Commandments.
