1 1 SENATE RESOLUTION NO.
1 2 BY VEENSTRA
1 3 A Resolution designating May 1, 2001, as statewide
1 4 Prayer Day.
1 5 WHEREAS, a "Prayer Day" was first proclaimed by the
1 6 Continental Congress in 1775; and
1 7 WHEREAS, it is fitting that we in the state of Iowa
1 8 observe a day when we acknowledge our many blessings
1 9 and express gratitude to God while recognizing the
1 10 need to strengthen the religious and moral values in
1 11 our land; and
1 12 WHEREAS, the national association for prayer
1 13 promotes a statewide "Prayer Day" in Iowa to bring
1 14 peace, unity, and healing to our people; and
1 15 WHEREAS, a number of states across America will
1 16 recognize the power of prayer by participating in
1 17 bringing people together to pray for our schools,
1 18 cities, states, and nation; and
1 19 WHEREAS, students at all levels of education should
1 20 be encouraged to begin their school day with the
1 21 pledge of allegiance, to begin the school day on a
1 22 positive note and reintroduce a worthy patriotic
1 23 program forgotten by many, and instill some
1 24 traditional values and morals, which are much needed
1 25 in this society; NOW THEREFORE,
1 26 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That May 1, 2001, be
1 27 designated as "Iowa Prayer Day" and all citizens are
1 28 urged to reflect on the role of prayer as a
1 29 fundamental part of the nation's heritage and that, in
1 30 seeking divine guidance, there is unifying power for
2 1 citizens from a diverse number of religious
2 2 backgrounds.
