1 11 A Resolution recognizing the achievements of Nancy Coover
  1 12 Andreasen.
  1 13 WHEREAS, Nancy Coover Andreasen, M.D., Ph.D., the
1 14 Andrew Woods Chair of Psychiatry, University of Iowa
1 15 College of Medicine, Editor of the American Journal of
1 16 Psychiatry, and author of hundreds of articles and
1 17 books including "The Broken Brain: The Biological
1 18 Revolution in Psychiatry" in 1984, is recognized
1 19 internationally for her distinguished contributions as
1 20 an educator, author, researcher, and provider of
1 21 mental health services in the field of psychiatry; and
1 22 WHEREAS, in her over 30 years of study and research
1 23 in the field of psychiatry, Dr. Andreasen has been a
1 24 leader and a visionary in her profession by, in
1 25 addition to her vast number of other accomplishments,
1 26 developing a tool to evaluate psychiatric
1 27 abnormalities and to rank their severity, which
1 28 evolved into a tool to rate symptoms of schizophrenia
1 29 becoming a "citation classic," cited more than the
1 30 works of Sigmund and Anna Freud combined; utilizing
2 1 neuroimaging to pinpoint and measure the biological
2 2 basis of human behavior in mental illness,
2 3 particularly schizophrenia; and being the first to
  2 4 demonstrate a relationship between manic-depressive
2 5 illness and creativity; and
2 6 WHEREAS, while Dr. Andreasen has been recognized by
2 7 her peers for her contributions to her profession with
2 8 numerous honors and awards, she is also recognized for
2 9 her compassion toward her patients, as an advocate for
2 10 persons with chronic mental illness, and as a person
2 11 who through her unique ability to make brain research
2 12 understandable to the public has provided relief and
2 13 hope to persons with mental illness and their
  2 14 families; and
2 15 WHEREAS, Dr. Andreasen once analogized the need for
2 16 a vision of the future in scientific research to
2 17 hockey, recalling a quote from Wayne Gretzky: "I
  2 18 skate to where the puck will be, not to where it is";
  2 19 and
2 20 WHEREAS, Dr. Andreasen has received numerous
2 21 honors, including most recently the President's
2 22 National Medal of Science on December 1, 2000, which
2 23 has only been awarded to 374 distinguished scientists
2 24 and engineers and to only three Iowans since its
  2 25 inception in 1959; and
2 26 WHEREAS, the inscription on the President's
2 27 National Medal of Science awarded to Dr. Andreasen
2 28 reads, "For her pivotal contributions to the social
2 29 and behavioral sciences, through the integrative study
2 30 of mind, brain, and behavior, by joining behavioral
3 1 science with the technologies of neuroscience and
3 2 neuroimaging in order to understand mental processes
3 3 such as memory and creativity, and mental illnesses
3 4 such as schizophrenia"; and
3 5 WHEREAS, Dr. Andreasen's humility in the midst of
3 6 all the acclaim is best typified by her own words in
3 7 acknowledging her most recent award: "I am a firm
3 8 believer that the importance of one's work is the
3 9 process of doing it, not in getting awards. When I
  3 10 die, I don't care what prizes I won. I care about
3 11 what contributions I can make through my work"; NOW
  3 12 THEREFORE,
3 13 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate
3 14 recognizes Dr. Andreasen not only as an award-winning,
3 15 internationally acknowledged psychiatrist, educator,
3 16 researcher, and author, but as an Iowa treasure who
3 17 through her genuine compassion and dedication has
3 18 improved the lives of and has provided hope and
3 19 understanding to persons with mental illness and their
  3 20 families.
