  1 16 A Resolution commemorating the Ninetieth Anniversary of
  1 17    the Girl Scouts.
  1 18    WHEREAS, Girl Scouts of the USA is celebrating its
  1 19 ninetieth anniversary as one of the world's finest
  1 20 youth development organizations; and
  1 21    WHEREAS, Juliette Gordon Low organized the first
  1 22 girl scout meeting of 18 girls on March 12, 1912, in
  1 23 Savannah, Georgia; and
  1 24    WHEREAS, Girl Scouts of the USA has a current
  1 25 membership of 2.8 million girls serving their
  1 26 communities, developing skills in everything from
  1 27 sports to science, and growing into leaders of
  1 28 tomorrow; and
  1 29    WHEREAS, in 1917, Lou Henry Hoover, wife of Herbert
  1 30 Hoover, was personally recruited by Juliette Low,
  2  1 founder of the Girl Scouts, and served continuously as
  2  2 a board member or officer of Girl Scouts of the USA
  2  3 for the rest of her life; and
  2  4    WHEREAS, Lou Henry Hoover is credited with the
  2  5 first sale of girl scout cookies in the 1930s; and
  2  6    WHEREAS, girl scouts responded to a request from
  2  7 President George W. Bush by making a personal gift of
  2  8 $1 each to help support the children of Afghanistan;
  2  9 and
  2 10    WHEREAS, girl scouts responded to the September 11
  2 11 attack on America by performing community service,
  2 12 hosting remembrance ceremonies, and writing thank-you
  2 13 notes to rescuers; and
  2 14    WHEREAS, girl scouts can now receive badges in
  2 15 Global Awareness, Adventure Sports, Stress Less, and
  2 16 Environmental Health; and
  2 17    WHEREAS, Girl Scouts has been involved throughout
  2 18 its history with societal issues and with welcoming
  2 19 girls of diverse backgrounds into its membership; and
  2 20    WHEREAS, the State of Iowa takes great pride in the
  2 21 many accomplishments of girl scouts and their leaders
  2 22 in the state; NOW THEREFORE,
  2 23    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES,
  2 24 That the House of Representatives proudly and
  2 25 gratefully acknowledges the contributions of Girl
  2 26 Scouts of the USA to our nation and to our state, and
  2 27 extends congratulations to Girl Scouts of the USA on
  2 28 its ninetieth anniversary.
