1 2 BY FOEGE, ELGIN, LARSON, MANTERNACH, SHEY,
1 3 D. TAYLOR, and T. TAYLOR
1 4 A Resolution honoring Jennifer Erbe for being named
1 5 Iowa Teacher of the Year for 2002.
1 6 WHEREAS, Ms. Jennifer Erbe graduated with highest
1 7 honors and received a bachelor of arts degree in
1 8 Elementary Education from the University of Northern
1 9 Iowa; and
1 10 WHEREAS, Since graduating from the University of
1 11 Northern Iowa, Ms. Erbe has taught at the first-grade
1 12 level and currently teaches at the third-grade level
1 13 at Starry Elementary School in Marion; and
1 14 WHEREAS, only seven years into her teaching career,
1 15 Ms. Erbe has distinguished herself with her innovative
1 16 methods in teaching science to young children; and
1 17 WHEREAS, Ms. Erbe recently trained fellow teachers
1 18 to facilitate Kids Doing Science activities; trained
1 19 24 fellow teachers in 1997 to use the computer, e-
1 20 mail, and the Internet for classroom instruction;
1 21 collaborated with a group of science teachers from
1 22 school districts throughout the local area education
1 23 agency to improve student learning in science; and
1 24 acted as a cooperating teacher with the Mount Mercy
1 25 College and Coe College practitioner preparation
1 26 programs; and
1 27 WHEREAS, Ms. Erbe has achieved National Board for
1 28 Professional Teaching Standards certification, is a
1 29 recipient of the Marion Independent School District
1 30 School Board Salute, the Rockwell-Collins Outstanding
2 1 Educator Honorable Mention, the Greater Cedar Rapids
2 2 Foundation Grant, and the US West Teacher Technology
2 3 Grant; and
2 4 WHEREAS, Governor Thomas Vilsack honored Ms. Erbe
2 5 as Iowa's 2002 Teacher of the Year at an awards
2 6 ceremony in Des Moines on Wednesday, March 20, 2002;
2 7 and
2 8 WHEREAS, as Iowa's Teacher of the Year, Ms. Erbe is
2 9 granted a one-year sabbatical to visit schools and to
2 10 speak to community groups as Iowa's Ambassador for
2 11 Education during the 2002-2003 school year and will
2 12 use that time on efforts aimed at retaining young
2 13 teachers, creating better science programs for
2 14 students in kindergarten through third grade, and on
2 15 improving parent-teacher communication through the
2 16 Internet; NOW THEREFORE,
2 17 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE, That the House honors
2 18 Ms. Jennifer Erbe of Starry Elementary School in
2 19 Marion for her exemplary work in education, her
2 20 leadership abilities, her efforts and achievements in
2 21 teaching Iowa students to enjoy and understand
2 22 science, and for her outstanding accomplishment in
2 23 being named the Iowa Teacher of the Year for 2002.
2 24 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That an official copy of
2 25 this Resolution be prepared for presentation to Ms.
2 26 Jennifer Erbe.
