  1  1                HOUSE RESOLUTION NO.    
  1  2                 BY  RICHARDSON and BELL
  1  3 A Resolution honoring Nick Ackerman on his athletic
  1  4    achievements.
  1  5    WHEREAS, Nick Ackerman compiled a record of 71 wins
  1  6 and 38 losses as a wrestler for Colfax-Mingo High
  1  7 School, including 32 wins and eight losses his senior
  1  8 year, during which he also placed sixth in the
  1  9 Division 1A State Wrestling Tournament, despite
  1 10 fracturing his wrist in a first round victory over a
  1 11 previously undefeated opponent; and
  1 12    WHEREAS, Nick Ackerman began his wrestling career
  1 13 as a freshman at Simpson College with four pins, and
  1 14 finished with a record of 15 wins and six losses,
  1 15 including eight pins; and
  1 16    WHEREAS, Nick Ackerman as a sophomore compiled a
  1 17 record of 14 wins and 15 losses, and was awarded the
  1 18 National Wrestling Hall of Fame's Medal of Courage for
  1 19 overcoming seemingly insurmountable challenges; and
  1 20    WHEREAS, Nick Ackerman as a junior led the Simpson
  1 21 College wrestling team with a record of 28 wins,
  1 22 including 11 pins, and 16 losses; and
  1 23    WHEREAS, Nick Ackerman as a senior compiled a
  1 24 record of 38 wins and four losses, including a 20-
  1 25 match victory streak, and defeated the reigning
  1 26 national champion by 13 points to 11 points to win the
  1 27 NCAA Division III National Championship at 174 pounds,
  1 28 and was named the tournament's outstanding wrestler;
  1 29 and
  1 30    WHEREAS, Nick Ackerman achieved athletic excellence
  2  1 despite the amputation of both of his legs below the
  2  2 knee, due to a childhood bout of bacterial meningitis;
  2  3 and
  2  4    WHEREAS, with the support and inspiration of his
  2  5 parents, Kurt and Cindy Ackerman, other family
  2  6 members, friends, and coaches, Nick Ackerman never
  2  7 learned that there might be limits to what he could
  2  8 achieve; NOW THEREFORE,
  2  9    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES,
  2 10 That the House of Representatives recognizes and
  2 11 extends its congratulations to Nick Ackerman for both
  2 12 his outstanding athletic achievements and for the
  2 13 lessons in fortitude and courage that his achievements
  2 14 demonstrate.
  2 15    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That when any member of the
  2 16 General Assembly is tempted to give up while wrestling
  2 17 with the great issues facing the State of Iowa, the
  2 18 member should follow the example of Nick Ackerman and
  2 19 overcome seemingly insurmountable challenges.
  2 20    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That, upon adoption, the
  2 21 Chief Clerk of the House of Representatives shall
  2 22 prepare official copies of this Resolution for
  2 23 presentation to Nick Ackerman, Kurt and Cindy
  2 24 Ackerman, Colfax-Mingo High School, and Simpson
  2 25 College.
