  1  1    Section 1.  Section 273.3, subsection 21, Code 2001, is
  1  2 amended to read as follows:
  1  3    21.  Be authorized to sell, lease, or dispose of, or give
  1  4 away, in whole or in part, property belonging to the area
  1  5 education agency.  Before the area education agency may sell
  1  6 property belonging to the agency, the board of directors shall
  1  7 comply with the requirements set forth in section 297.22.  The
  1  8 notice and public hearing provisions of section 297.22,
  1  9 subsection 1, however, shall not apply to a sale of property
  1 10 other than real property, with a value less than or equal to
  1 11 one thousand dollars, if the sale is made to a school district
  1 12 located within the area education agency.  Before the board of
  1 13 directors of an area education agency may lease property
  1 14 belonging to the agency, the board shall obtain the approval
  1 15 of the director of the department of education.
