PAG LIN 1 1 Section 1. Section 152C.1, subsection 3, Code 2001, is 1 2 amended by adding the following new unnumbered paragraph: 1 3 NEW UNNUMBERED PARAGRAPH. "Massage therapy" additionally 1 4 does not include the practice of reflexology. As used in this 1 5 subsection, "reflexology" means the application of specific 1 6 pressures using thumb, finger, and hand techniques to zones 1 7 and reflex areas in the feet and hands, with the objective of 1 8 reducing tension, improving circulation, and promoting the 1 9 natural functioning of the human body. 1 10 Sec. 2. NEW SECTION. 152C.9 REFLEXOLOGY EXEMPTION. 1 11 An individual who is engaged exclusively in the practice of 1 12 reflexology, and whose professional practice does not 1 13 incorporate aspects that constitute massage therapy as defined 1 14 in section 152C.1, shall not be subject to the licensure 1 15 provisions of this chapter. 1 16 EXPLANATION 1 17 This bill provides that the practice of reflexology shall 1 18 not constitute "massage therapy" subject to the licensure 1 19 provisions of Code chapter 152C. The bill defines 1 20 "reflexology" as the application of specific pressures using 1 21 thumb, finger, and hand techniques to zones and reflex areas 1 22 in the feet and hands, with the objective of reducing tension, 1 23 improving circulation, and promoting the natural functioning 1 24 of the human body. The bill provides that to be exempt from 1 25 licensure, an individual shall be exclusively engaged in the 1 26 practice of reflexology and shall not incorporate in the 1 27 individual's professional practice aspects that constitute 1 28 massage therapy as defined in Code chapter 152C. 1 29 LSB 5764HH 79 1 30 rn/sh/8
