1 1 Section 1. NEW SECTION. 283A.4A MEDICAL ASSISTANCE AND
1 2 HEALTHY AND WELL KIDS IN IOWA PROGRAMS – IDENTIFICATION AND
1 3 ENROLLMENT ASSISTANCE.
1 4 In accordance with the federal Agricultural Risk Protection
1 5 Act of 2000, Pub. L. No. 106-224, subtitle E, the director of
1 6 the department of education shall utilize the applications for
1 7 school breakfast or lunch programs, for which federal funding
1 8 is provided, to identify and provide assistance to children
1 9 for enrollment in the medical assistance program pursuant to
1 10 chapter 249A or the healthy and well kids in Iowa program
1 11 pursuant to chapter 514I.
1 12 Sec. 2. Section 514I.7, subsection 2, Code 2001, is
1 13 amended by adding the following new paragraph:
1 14 NEW PARAGRAPH. q. Assist the department of education in
1 15 developing a procedure in compliance with the federal
1 16 Agricultural Risk Protection Act of 2000, Pub. L. No. 106-224,
1 17 subtitle E, to utilize the applications for school breakfast
1 18 or lunch programs, as defined in section 283A.1, to identify
1 19 and provide assistance to children for enrollment in the
1 20 medical assistance or HAWK-I program pursuant to section
1 21 283A.4A. The administrative contractor shall also provide
1 22 program applications and other program information to the
1 23 department of education in implementing this provision.
1 24 EXPLANATION
1 25 This bill directs the director of the department of
1 26 education to utilize applications for the school breakfast and
1 27 lunch programs, for which federal funding is provided, to
1 28 identify and provide assistance to children for enrollment in
1 29 the medical assistance or healthy and well kids in Iowa (HAWK-
1 30 I) program, in accordance with federal law, which allows for
1 31 the sharing of information obtained through applications for
1 32 the school breakfast or lunch programs with administrators of
1 33 the medical assistance and HAWK-I programs. The bill also
1 34 directs the administrative contractor of the HAWK-I program to
1 35 assist the director of the department of education in
2 1 implementing the directive.
