1 3 A Concurrent Resolution designating May 1, 2002, as
1 4 Right-to-Work Day in Iowa.
1 5 WHEREAS, right-to-work laws guarantee that a person
1 6 cannot be compelled, as a condition of employment, to
1 7 join or not to join a labor union, or to pay dues to a
1 8 labor union; and
1 9 WHEREAS, section 14(b) of the federal Taft-Hartley
1 10 Act of 1947 established the rights of states to enact
1 11 right-to-work laws for workers in their state; and
1 12 WHEREAS, Iowa's Fifty-second General Assembly
1 13 enacted Iowa's right-to-work law by making it unlawful
1 14 to discriminate in the employment of any person either
1 15 because of membership or nonmembership in a labor
1 16 union; and
1 17 WHEREAS, Iowa's right-to-work law became effective
1 18 on May 1, 1947, and has remained in full force and
1 19 effect since that day; and
1 20 WHEREAS, May 1, 2002, will be the fifty-fifth
1 21 anniversary of Iowa's enactment of a right-to-work
1 22 law; NOW THEREFORE,
1 23 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, THE
1 24 SENATE CONCURRING, That the Iowa General Assembly
1 25 designates the day of May 1, 2002, as Right-to-Work
1 26 Day in Iowa.
