1 2 BY COMMITTEE ON LABOR AND INDUSTRIAL RELATIONS

1 4 A Concurrent Resolution designating May 1, 2002, as
1 5 Iowa Right-to-Work Day.
1 6 WHEREAS, right-to-work laws guarantee that a person
1 7 cannot be compelled, as a condition of employment, to
1 8 join or not to join a labor union, or to pay dues to a
1 9 labor union; and
1 10 WHEREAS, section 14(b) of the federal Taft-Hartley
1 11 Act of 1947 established the rights of states to enact
1 12 right-to-work laws for workers in their state; and
1 13 WHEREAS, Iowa's Fifty-second General Assembly
1 14 enacted Iowa's right-to-work law by making it unlawful
1 15 to discriminate in the employment of any person either
1 16 because of membership or nonmembership in a labor
1 17 union; and
1 18 WHEREAS, Iowa's right-to-work law became effective
1 19 on May 1, 1947, and has remained in full force and
1 20 effect since that day; and
1 21 WHEREAS, May 1, 2002, will be the fifty-fifth
1 22 anniversary of Iowa's enactment of a right-to-work
1 23 law; NOW THEREFORE,
1 24 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, THE
1 25 SENATE CONCURRING, That the Iowa General Assembly
1 26 designates the day of May 1, 2002, as Iowa Right-To-
1 27 Work Day.
